The Unfinished Obelisk

Still lying in the quarry where it cracked, three and a half thousand years ago.

Had it been finished it would have been the largest obelisk ever raised — 42 metres, around 1,200 tonnes. A fissure opened in the granite while it was still attached to the bedrock, and it was abandoned exactly where it lay.

That abandonment is why it matters: the quarry floor still shows the tool marks, the trenches cut by hand around the shaft, and the dolerite pounders left behind. There is no better place to understand how the things in every other temple were actually made.
