M/S Luna Shore visits Philae Temple
Aswan
The temple of Isis, taken apart and rebuilt on higher ground when the dam raised the lake.
Philae was never meant to be where it is. When the first Aswan dam went up, the island the temple stood on spent most of the year under water; when the High Dam followed, it would have gone under permanently. Between 1972 and 1980 the whole complex was cut into 40,000 blocks and reassembled on Agilkia Island, 500 metres away and 20 metres higher.
You reach it by motorboat from the shore, which is half the pleasure. The reliefs inside the Temple of Isis are among the last hieroglyphic inscriptions ever cut — the final one dates to AD 394.
