Karnak is not one temple but a precinct that thirty pharaohs kept adding to across two millennia. The Great Hypostyle Hall alone covers 5,000 square metres under 134 columns, the tallest of them 21 metres — you walk through it rather than look at it.
Beyond the hall are Hatshepsut’s obelisks, the sacred lake, and the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes that once ran the three kilometres to Luxor Temple.
