The Aswan High Dam

The wall that made Lake Nasser and changed the river for good.

Typical visit45 minutes

Three and a half kilometres of rock and clay across the Nile, finished in 1970. It ended the annual flood that had defined Egyptian agriculture for five thousand years, generates roughly a tenth of the country’s electricity, and created the largest artificial lake in the world behind it.

The visit is short and mostly about scale and the view — from the observation point you see Lake Nasser on one side and the old river on the other.
