Ramses II cut two temples into a sandstone cliff above the Nile, then UNESCO cut them out again in the 1960s and reassembled them 65 metres higher and 200 metres back before the lake arrived. The join lines are visible if you look for them, which somehow adds to it.

Twice a year, on 22 February and 22 October, the rising sun reaches the length of the inner sanctuary and lights three of the four statues at the back.
