The Nubian settlements around Elephantine and Gharb Soheil are what remained after the Nubian resettlement of the 1960s. The houses are domed, painted in blocks of ochre, blue and pink, and most of them will invite you in for hibiscus tea.
We go across under sail rather than by motorboat, which takes longer and is the entire point.
